Charles Blondin, the French-born tightrope walker, is the subject here, shown on his rope above the Niagara Gorge. In June 1859 he crossed on a cable about 1,100 feet long, roughly 160 feet above the rapids, and that summer he repeated the feat with stunts such as stopping midway to cook an omelet. The record names Charles Magnus as an associated figure, though that attribution is unverified and no date is recorded. Crowds that came to watch made the crossing one of the most talked-about spectacles of its era.
