Rather than a balloon, this picture shows an aeroplane crash, with onlookers hoisting the wrecked machine off the men beneath it. The scene matches the Wright brothers' demonstration flight at Fort Myer, Virginia, on September 17, 1908, when a propeller broke and the aircraft fell. Orville Wright was seriously hurt, and his passenger, Lieutenant Thomas Selfridge, died of his injuries. The photoprint was published by P.F. Collier & Son and copyrighted in late September 1908, while public attention was fixed on the Army's trials of powered flight.
