Pictured is a Wright hydro-aeroplane, a flying machine fitted with floats so it could take off from and land on water, photographed at the Battery, the southern tip of Manhattan on New York Harbor. Around 1912, aviation makers were racing to show that aircraft could operate from water as well as from fields, and the Wright company, best known for its land machines, built floatplane designs to compete. The print was copyrighted by the photographer Irving Underhill, so it likely records a publicized demonstration rather than a casual snapshot. The date and location come from an unverified caption card, so the exact occasion is worth checking against contemporary newspapers.
