The Pischoff aeroplane, photographed in 1908, is one of the early powered flying machines recorded by George Grantham Bain, whose news service supplied pictures to newspapers in the years before the First World War. In 1908 powered flight was still experimental, and builders in Europe and the United States were testing wing shapes, engines and steering systems, often with uncertain results. Bain's pictures of such machines show how strange and unsettled aviation looked to the public at the time.
