This photograph captures a parachute jump from an airplane over Buffalo, New York, around 1922, at the moment a jumper leaves the aircraft. The record credits Milton J. Washburn as the photographer and names Geo. Starr of Buffalo in the title line, and a U.S. Copyright Office notation shows it was registered for protection. In the early 1920s, parachuting was still a novel spectacle, with stunt performers and exhibition flyers drawing crowds to fairs and airfields. Aerial views like this one show how quickly the airplane was becoming a subject for both entertainment and the camera.
