Orville Wright, one of the two brothers who built and flew the first powered airplane at Kitty Hawk in 1903, appears here on a glass negative from the Bain News Service, a Manhattan photo agency that supplied newspapers with pictures of the news from roughly 1900 to 1920. The record gives no date, and the title comes from caption cards the agency wrote itself and that have not been independently checked, so the exact occasion is uncertain. What the collection does show is how press photographers of that era worked: fast, large-format glass plates that caught aviators and inventors at public events, when flight was still a novelty that drew crowds and headlines.
