Two girls stand in San Francisco's Chinatown, each holding a balloon, and the setting is what sets this picture apart from the many street portraits Arnold Genthe made of the neighborhood. Genthe, a German-born photographer, spent years in Chinatown in the early 1900s, and his images of its residents and streets became some of the most widely reproduced views of the district before the 1906 earthquake and fire. The record gives no date, so the exact year of the exposure is unverified, but the children's relaxed poses and the simple toys suggest a casual moment on a city street rather than a staged studio portrait.
