Two balloons drift upward through a bank of clouds in this brown wash drawing, a pairing that was less common than the single-balloon scenes that dominated early ballooning art. The French were the first to send people aloft, beginning with the Montgolfier brothers' hot-air balloon at Annonay in 1783 and Jacques Charles's hydrogen balloon in Paris later that year, so images of the sport from this period often carried a sense of national pride and wonder. Brown wash, built from layered diluted ink or paint, lets the artist suggest the soft volume of cloud and the glow of air with few lines. Look at how the balloons are left mostly open, with their forms emerging from the paper itself.
