A c1901 photoprint copyrighted by Irving Underhill of New York, this picture shows the Statue of Liberty at a time when it was already a fixture of the harbor, nearly fifteen years after its dedication in 1886. The statue was a gift from France, designed by sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, with its interior iron framework engineered by Gustave Eiffel. Its image was widely reproduced as a souvenir, so photographs like this one reached visitors and collectors across the country. The record comes from an unverified caption card, so its exact date and details should be treated with some caution.
