Little Missouri Butte, the largest of three buttes about 4 miles from Devil's Tower, rises from the open country of northeastern Wyoming near the Little Missouri River. The photograph dates to 1890 and was submitted for copyright, a process that required a print to be deposited with the Library of Congress. It belongs to the John C. H. Grabill Collection, the work of a photographer who recorded the Black Hills region of Wyoming and South Dakota. The bare rock forms and wide terrain offer a view of a landscape that drew travelers and settlers of the period.
