Few sites in Mexico City carry as much weight as Chapultepec Castle, the hilltop fortress shown here, which rises above the park on a rocky outcrop. It began as a late eighteenth-century viceregal summer residence, later housed a military academy, and in September 1847 its cadets made a final stand against U.S. forces during the Mexican-American War. The shelflist card names Klauprech & Menzel's as the associated publisher, but that attribution and the print's date are unverified, so the view is best read as a depiction of the building and its setting.
