Although the record files this view under Scotland, Harlech Castle stands on a rocky height above the sea on the Welsh coast of Gwynedd, a fortress raised by Edward I in the 1280s. This photogravure by George Davidson was published in the April 1909 issue of *Camera Work*, the journal Alfred Stieglitz edited to present photography as a fine art. Its appearance there reflects the magazine's interest in carefully made pictorial views of historic architecture. The castle's long siege during the Wars of the Roses adds to the historical weight of its ruined walls.
