Kilchurn Castle stands on a low promontory where the River Orchy enters Loch Awe in Argyll, its ruined tower and walls reflected in the water. The Campbells of Glenorchy began building it in the mid-fifteenth century, and it grew into a substantial fortified residence before the family moved its seat and the castle was left to decay. This sepia print, catalogued as dating from the 1880s, comes from the Detroit Publishing Company's views of Britain, which made scenic places like this one widely known to American audiences.
