Dundrennan Castle, the ruin shown here, is not actually a castle in the fortress sense but the remains of a Cistercian abbey in Kirkcudbrightshire, southwest Scotland, founded in 1142 by King David I. Its surviving walls and arches, with their pointed Gothic details, make it one of the best-preserved abbey sites in the region. Mary, Queen of Scots, is said to have spent her final night on Scottish soil here in 1568 before crossing to England. Around 1912, when this print was made, such medieval ruins drew many visitors and photographers interested in Scotland's past.
