Stewart Castle, the turreted stone mansion on Dupont Circle, stood out among Washington's grand houses for its fortress-like silhouette. It was built for Nevada Senator William Morris Stewart, and in the 1890s it served as the Chinese Legation, giving a Romanesque-style residence an unexpected diplomatic role. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a photographer who documented the capital's architecture and interiors, recorded the building during this period. Her view offers a useful glimpse of how foreign missions occupied large private houses in the city's fashionable northwest quarter.
