Belle Grove, the plantation house in White Castle, Iberville Parish, Louisiana, is the subject here, shown as it appeared in 1952 after a fire on March 15 of that year. The photograph documents the damage in the immediate aftermath, when the house's survival was in question. It belongs to the Laughlin Collection of architectural records, which preserved images of Southern buildings at a time when many historic houses were being lost to neglect and fire. The caption details are unverified, but the view still shows how a major antebellum residence on the Mississippi sugar lands looked after it was badly damaged.
