Billed as a modern witch of Endor, the performer on this tall color woodcut draws on the Old Testament story of the medium who summoned the spirit of the prophet Samuel for King Saul. Printed in Hartford by the Calhoun firm around 1870, the poster reflects the period's popular interest in spiritualist seances, fortune telling and stage magic, when traveling shows advertised with large sheets meant to catch passersby's attention. Its roughly seven-foot height and bold linework, paired with color, show how commercial printers of the era turned spectacle into public advertising.
