Samri S. Baldwin is billed here as "the white mahatma," a title that signals the exotic, mystical air the performer wanted to project. Western showmen of the 19th century often borrowed "mahatma," a Sanskrit term meaning "great soul," to suggest Eastern wisdom, and the skulls and cats in this tall color woodcut promise an eerie, sensational spectacle. Printed by the Calhoun Printing firm in Hartford around 1870, the poster was designed to catch the eye on a street wall. Baldwin lived from 1848 to 1924, and the sheet offers a useful look at how stage magic advertised itself in that period.
