Tobacco makers often borrowed the names and imagery of dramatic events to make their packages stand out, and this chewing tobacco label takes its name from the eclipse, a sight that drew crowds and newspaper attention. The label was printed in color around 1871 by Wilstach, Baldwin & Co., a Cincinnati lithography firm that produced many such labels for manufacturers. Americans had watched a total solar eclipse cross parts of the country in August 1869, so the subject was still fresh in public memory. The copyright notice shows the design was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, which offered some protection to these commercial labels.
