This print shows the solar eclipse of May 26, 1854, recorded at West Point, the U.S. Military Academy on the Hudson River in New York. It is one of the plates from Bartlett's series of photographs of that eclipse, and the number 16 in its notes places it within that set. Photographing an eclipse in the 1850s meant working with slow wet-collodion and daguerreotype processes and very short windows of time, so each plate captured a brief stage of the sun's partial phases. The series stands among the early attempts to use photography as a scientific record of celestial events.
