Pale arms curl outward from a bright core against an unbroken black field, giving this galaxy the look of a slow whirlpool. Astronomers first recorded such shapes by eye in the 1840s, when the third Earl of Rosse sketched the Whirlpool Galaxy through his great Irish telescope. In the 1920s Edwin Hubble showed that these spirals lay far beyond the Milky Way, and they appear on an astrology and magic board because the sky was once read for omens.
