Rising from the desert of southern Arizona, the McMath Solar Telescope at Kitt Peak is a tower built to hold a sunlit beam steady for study. Completed in 1962, it was among the largest solar telescopes of its time, and it directs sunlight down a long shaft to instruments housed underground, where temperature stays stable enough for precise measurements. Garnett's photograph later appeared in Nathaniel Owings' *The American Aesthetic* (1969), which presented modern American architecture as a form of national expression. Look at how the tower's clean, geometric lines stand out against the open sky.
