Richard Croker, the Tammany Hall boss, sits at the center of this Puck centerfold as the sun, with city officials circling him like planets in a new solar system. The color lithograph appeared on March 30, 1898, from the magazine's longtime artists, Keppler & Schwarzmann. It came only weeks after the consolidation of Greater New York took effect on January 1, 1898, which joined Brooklyn and surrounding areas to Manhattan. Croker's grip on city patronage was a frequent target of the magazine's satire at the time.
