Two plates from Warren De La Rue's account of the total solar eclipse of July 18, 1860, show the sun at the moments just after totality began and just before it ended. The eclipse was observed at Rivabellosa, near Miranda de Ebro in Spain, where De La Rue set up his instruments. London lithographer Vincent Brooks produced the color plates, which render the faint corona, the reddish prominences and the shifting light at the edge of the sun's disk. Published in 1862, the plates show how mid-century astronomers relied on careful drawing, alongside the new art of photography, to preserve what a few minutes of darkness revealed.
