Plate 32 of Jehoshaphat Aspin's *A Familiar Treatise on Astronomy* (London, 1825) gathers eleven constellations on one sheet, including the owl, raven, cat, snake, and wolf alongside less familiar figures named for instruments: the air pump, the sextant, and the ship's compass. Those instrument names come from 18th-century and earlier star catalogs, when astronomers and navigators sometimes placed their tools in the sky. The engraving is credited to Sidney Hall, a prolific London engraver of celestial charts and educational prints. Its hand coloring, applied to each impression, was common in period books and gives the figures their shading and emphasis.
