Plate XXI in the 1874 second edition of James Nasmyth and James Carpenter's *The Moon* shows a single "normal" crater, the ringed hollow that the authors considered the most typical feature of the lunar surface. Nasmyth made his lunar landscapes as plaster models, lit at a low angle to mimic the long shadows the Sun casts on the Moon, and photographed them so the results could be compared with telescopic views. The plate was printed by woodburytype, a photomechanical process that produces continuous tones closer to a photograph than to an engraving, which suited the book's aim of presenting the Moon as a real landscape.
