Rather than a view through a telescope, this plate shows a constructed scene. James Nasmyth, the Scottish engineer best known for the steam hammer, built plaster landscapes of craters and peaks and photographed them under raking light to suggest the lunar surface. The image appeared as Plate XXIII in *The Moon*, which Nasmyth wrote with James Carpenter, in the 1874 second edition published in London by John Murray. The woodburytype process reproduces continuous tone without a halftone screen, so the sunlit ridges and shadowed crater floors keep a softness that suited a book on lunar scenery.
