Rather than a scene of gods, this plate shows a centaur personifying the genius of the circus games, a figure drawn from an ancient floor mosaic. A. La Borde made the drawing and J. Marchand engraved it for Alexandre de Laborde's 1802 *Description d'un pavé en mosaïque*, a study of a pavement found at Italica in southern Spain, the Roman town that produced the emperors Trajan and Hadrian. The book came from Paris under the P. Didot imprint, during a period when engravers reproduced classical finds for scholars and collectors. The color in this impression gives some sense of the original tiled surface.
