Herbert Hoover's house at 2300 S Street stands out among the city views for its link to a future president. Hoover, a mining engineer who had led wartime food relief and the U.S. Food Administration, became Secretary of Commerce in 1921 and lived in this part of Washington during his years in that post. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, which recorded the capital's buildings and streets on glass negatives in the early twentieth century. Streaks and blemishes on the negative come from the coatings deteriorating over time, and they are worth noticing as part of the image's physical history.
