The house at 1529 18th Street in Washington belonged to Charles E. Hughes, and the record names him as its occupant around 1920 to 1921. The picture is a glass negative from the National Photo Company, a commercial studio that photographed the capital's streets, buildings, and residences in the early twentieth century. Such views recorded domestic architecture that is now rarely seen in this form. The negative shows streaks and blemishes from the deterioration of its original coating, which is typical of glass plates of this age.
