Four nations' gas masks are compared side by side in this glass negative, as the caption indicates for the American, British, French and German examples. Gas warfare reshaped the Western Front after Germany released chlorine at Ypres in April 1915, and armies on both sides rushed to issue respirators to their men. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news pictures to newspapers, made the negative, but its caption data is unverified, so the exact date and setting remain uncertain. Seen together, the four styles show how varied wartime respirator designs were.
