On July 4, 1918, 95 ships were launched on a single day, and this poster turns that Independence Day rush into a wave of steel. The United States Shipping Board's Emergency Fleet Corporation, which issued the piece through its Philadelphia publications section, was racing to build merchant vessels after German submarines had sunk Allied shipping faster than it could be replaced. Posters like this one aimed to show workers and the public that the nation's shipyards were delivering results, and this color lithograph was printed by Thomsen-Ellis Co. of Baltimore and New York.
