The slogan on this 1917 color lithograph borrows the title of George M. Cohan's song "Over There," which was then sweeping the country as the nation's soldiers headed to France. The poster makes a practical argument: troops and their food depended on cargo ships crossing the Atlantic, and those ships were needed as much as soldiers were. After the United States entered the war in April 1917, the government pushed to build and man merchant vessels, and posters like this one urged civilians to see shipping as part of the war effort. The lithograph's bold color and direct wording were typical of wartime appeals meant to be read quickly on city streets.
