The record's title is cut short at "Ast. Urstal," and the original caption was scratched off the glass, so the subject of this negative can only be partly identified. It belongs to the National Photo Company Collection, a body of roughly 13,000 glass negatives made between about 1909 and 1923 by a commercial studio that photographed American cities, landmarks, and everyday scenes for sale as prints and postcards. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from deterioration of the original coating, and they are worth noticing when studying the image.
