The title pairs Ed Barrow with a second man whose name was scratched off the glass, and the National Photo Company's identification of both men was never verified. Barrow was a baseball figure who moved from managing on the field into front-office work, and he later helped build the New York Yankees into a powerful club in the 1920s. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented public life across the country in the early twentieth century, made this negative in the years between 1909 and 1923. Visible streaks and blemishes come from deterioration of the original emulsion coating, which is common in glass negatives of this age.
