Theaterplatz, or Theater Square, takes its name from the theater that anchored it in Bucharest, the capital of Romania. The square was one of the city's busy public spaces in the late 1800s, when Bucharest was growing quickly and borrowing ideas about boulevards and civic architecture from Paris. This photochrom print was made with a process developed in Switzerland in the 1880s, which combined photographs with stone-printed color layers that were often hand-retouched. Detroit Publishing Co. distributed these views in the United States, so the print also records how European city scenes were sold to American buyers around 1900.
