The only name attached to this glass negative is "Rothier," a title the Library of Congress marks as unverified, so it works better as a lead than as a confirmed identity. A likely candidate is the French-born bass Léon Rothier, who sang with the Metropolitan Opera for many seasons, but nothing in the record ties this plate to him. The negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York picture agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Its glass plates document many of the people and events the agency covered.
