Few details survive for this glass negative beyond its title, which names Jos. Schwarz and his wife as the sitters. The image belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress, made up of pictures issued by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers from the early 1900s until the 1920s. The Bain files were built from negatives that were often captioned in haste, so the names here come from the agency's own notes and have not been independently verified. Glass plates like this one were the standard working medium of press photographers of the period, and their sharp detail is part of why the collection remains a useful record of everyday American life.
