Frank Orren Lowden and his wife, Florence Pullman Lowden, are the pair named in this glass negative, though the record notes that the identification comes from unverified Bain News Service data. Lowden served as governor of Illinois from 1917 to 1921 and was a Republican contender for the presidential nomination in 1920. Florence was a daughter of George Pullman, the railway sleeping-car magnate, which tied the couple to one of Chicago's best-known industrial fortunes. Bain's New York agency distributed images like this to newspapers, so the portrait reflects how public figures of that era were pictured for a wide audience.
