The name on this glass negative, Besanzoni, is the only identifying detail the record gives, and the Bain News Service supplied it without verification. It most likely refers to Gabriella Besanzoni, an Italian mezzo-soprano who performed leading operatic roles in Europe and in American opera houses during the 1910s and 1920s. Bain's staff photographed many performers and public figures in New York in those years, when press photographs of singers and stage personalities were widely circulated in newspapers. The record gives no date, so the exact occasion is unknown, but the negative reflects the period's demand for portraits of performers.
