Soprano Geraldine Farrar appears here in the title role of *Madame Sans-Gêne*, a part she sang in Umberto Giordano's opera, which the Metropolitan Opera staged in 1915. The opera drew on Victorien Sardou's 1893 play about a laundress who rises to become the wife of a Napoleonic marshal. The Bain News Service, the New York photo agency behind this collection, sold pictures like this to newspapers, which shows how stage stars were publicized in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date for this negative, so the exact occasion is unknown.
