The title on this glass negative is simply "Farrar." Given the New York focus of the Bain News Service, it most likely refers to the soprano Geraldine Farrar, a leading Metropolitan Opera star in the 1900s and 1910s who was photographed often for the press. The identification is unverified, though. The name comes from the negative or its caption card, and the record gives no date or description of the sitter. Founded by George Grantham Bain, the agency sold daily news pictures to newspapers, so its glass plates reflect the fast, deadline-driven photography of the early twentieth century.
