Soprano Geraldine Farrar appears here in costume as Sister Angelica, the title character of Giacomo Puccini's one-act opera. The work had its world premiere at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in December 1918, with Farrar in the lead role, and she was one of the company's most celebrated stars of that era, so the picture likely dates from around that production. The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency, produced large numbers of news and celebrity photographs, and its glass negatives show how stage performers were presented to the public in the early twentieth century. The record does not give a date, so the link to the premiere is an inference rather than a confirmed fact.
