The Plaza de Toros of Madrid, the bullring that stood in the city's Salamanca district, is the subject of this color lithograph, which the record dates to somewhere between 1860 and 1870. It is numbered No. 5, suggesting it belonged to a series of views rather than a standalone sheet. Bullrings were central to Spanish public life in the nineteenth century, drawing crowds from every social rank to watch the corrida, and prints like this one helped spread images of those spectacles across Europe. Look closely at the seating tiers and the crowd, which were as much a part of the scene as the bull itself.
