Mules of the Plaza de Toros is a color lithograph from the 1860s, numbered "No. 3" in its record, that turns the bullring's grim routine toward its unglamorous working animals. In Spanish bullfights, after a bull was killed or disabled, teams of mules were hitched to drag the carcass out of the arena, and the spectacle of these animals hauling the dead bull out in front of the crowd was a familiar part of the afternoon. The print's subject is therefore the stagecraft behind the corrida rather than the matador, and it is worth looking at how the artist frames the mules as the real workers of the ring.
