Looking north from the high ground of Summerville, the view takes in the rooftops and church spires of Augusta, a river town that grew up on the Savannah River's fall line. Summerville developed as a cooler, healthier retreat from the heat and fevers of the low-lying town, and its elevation gave residents a clear prospect over the city. Augusta's economy in the nineteenth century rested on cotton, river trade and the canal that powered its mills, and a view like this one shows how closely the town's streets and commerce tied to the water below.
