The Savannah River forms the boundary between Georgia and South Carolina, and Augusta grew up on its banks as a river port. For much of the 19th century, steamboats and flatboats brought cotton, goods and passengers up from the coast to the town's landings. The Augusta Canal, completed in the 1840s, diverted river water to power textile mills, which turned the waterfront into an industrial district. Scenes of the river at Augusta show how closely the city's trade and growth depended on that water.
