Savannah's squares and their surrounding houses were laid out in 1733 under James Oglethorpe, whose plan of wards and open green spaces still shapes the historic core. Houses of this kind, many of them raised on brick or tabby foundations and fronted by wide porches, grew up around those squares through the 19th century as merchants, cotton factors and shipping families built their homes close to the river port. Savannah was one of the few American cities to keep much of its early fabric intact, so a view of these older houses offers a glimpse of how the town looked long before modern development reached it.
