A color print of Betsy Ross, made around 1908 from a painting by G. Liebscher, shows the Philadelphia upholsterer (1752-1836) whom family tradition credits with sewing the first American flag. Her grandson, William Canby, presented that account to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania in 1870, and historians have since questioned it. By the time this print appeared, under a copyright held by F.A. Schneider, the story was a staple of school lessons and patriotic display, and images like this one helped keep it in circulation.
