Before Uncle Sam's stern gaze and pointing finger became the best-known recruiting image of the First World War, this version ran in color on page 173 of *Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper* in February 1917. James Montgomery Flagg drew it as the United States was moving toward entry into the war, and the design was later issued as a poster. Flagg reportedly used his own face as the model for Uncle Sam, which gives the figure its unusually personal, direct look. Halftone reproduction allowed a weekly newspaper to carry a full-color illustration to a wide readership at relatively low cost.
